WHAT IS RAW HONEY?

It can be used to sweeten your coffee, tea and can be spread on your toast, but what really is honey?

A thick, golden liquid produced by industrious bees, honey is made using the nectar of flowering plants and is saved inside the beehive for eating during times of scarcity. But how do bees make honey?

Honeybees extract nectar, a  sugary liquid, from flowers using their, long tube-shaped tongue and store in an extra stomach, or "crop". While the nectar moves around in the crop, the nectar is mixed with enzymes that transform the nectar's chemical composition and pH to prepare it for long-term storage.

Raw local honey contains only pure, raw honey from hives located here in the Virginia Beach area. The honey is free of chemicals, antibiotics, and everything else you don’t want in your food. It is uncooked, unfiltered and 100% natural with all the enzymes, amino acids, and pollen.

The raw local honey is extracted from our members own hives.
The texture is creamy, but naturally fluctuates based on temperature. Cooler temperatures will help the honey solidify, while warmer ones will cause it to liquefy a bit more. Creamy, truly raw honey often will have bits of wax, propolis, and honey foam visible at the top and throughout the jar. A bit of separation is completely natural, so simply stir and enjoy! If it crystallizes, not to worry it is not spoiled. The honey needs to be re-liquefied. There are many methods that can be used to accomplish this. Just keep in mind that the honey should not be warmed over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The flavor of the honey starts to change once heated above 100F. Never heat it above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it is heated beyond 120F all of the natural enzymes, amino acids and pollen start to breakdown and are cooked off just like many of the brands of honey sold in stores.
